Dental Crowns Protect TeethIt's no fun, is it? Your damaged smile needs attention. Cracked teeth with multiple fillings compromise how you eat and how you look. Your Kinnelon, NJ, family dentist, Dr. Peter Brusco, has the solution. Custom-made porcelain crowns can restore your smile's strength and beauty, so you feel confident once again.

Is it a Crown or a Cap?

Actually, the dental crown is called by either name. It's a tooth-shaped restoration which fits over the remaining healthy parts of a tooth compromised by:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Infection
  • Decay
  • Old and deteriorating fillings
  • Injury

Porcelain is today's material of choice for most crowns and for bridgework (adjacent artificial teeth) secured by crowns. Natural-looking and very durable, porcelain are colored and shaped to blend in with the rest of your smile. Only you and your Kinnelon, NJ, family dentist will know you have a dental crown.

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry reports that 15 million Americans have porcelain crowns and bridges. So, you know these restorations are effective. Combine these statistics with Dr. Brusco's experience and expertise, and you can count on a lasting, healthy, beautiful smile. Crowns even cover dental implants and teeth that have been treated with root canal procedures. So, crowns are very versatile and reliable.

The Crown Procedure

You'll visit Dr. Brusco's office twice for your crown placement. The steps are simple and include:

  • A complete oral examination and X-ray imaging of the tooth
  • Oral impressions, either with traditional putty and trays or with digital imaging
  • Removal of the damaged portions of the tooth
  • Shaping of the tooth, so it properly receives the dental crown
  • Placement of a temporary restoration to protect the tooth as the permanent crown is made at the dental lab
  • Healing time of about one week
  • Removal of the temporary cap
  • Bonding of the new cap over the tooth
  • Adjustment of bite and shape as needed

Crown Care

You'll find the crown procedure easy and comfortable. Afterwards, simply brush and floss as you usually do, and see Dr. Brusco every six months for a routine check-up and professional cleaning.

If you grind or clench your teeth, your crown could wear prematurely. So, ask Dr. Brusco about a bite guard to wear at night.

Porcelain VeneersDental veneers offer a convenient and effective solution to dramatically improving the appearance of your smile. Dental veneers might be right for you if you wish to conceal cracks, chips, or other imperfections in teeth. A dentist can place dental veneers on the fronts of problem teeth and give you a brand new smile. Dental veneers are custom made for each patient for the most natural look possible. Dr. Peter Brusco is your Kinnelon, NJ, family dentist for dental veneers.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are placed over the fronts of problem teeth to give those teeth a completely new look by covering any imperfections. Porcelain is a close match for tooth enamel, so dental veneers look completely natural. Further, the color, size, and shape of each dental veneer are customized to perfectly fit the tooth it will be covering, while also blending in with the surrounding teeth for the most natural look possible.

Benefits of Dental Veneers

Your smile can benefit in several ways with dental veneers. Teeth with a range of cosmetic flaws can be transformed simply by setting dental veneers in place to conceal the imperfections. A major benefit of dental veneers is that placement is permanent so the veneers remain securely in place, even when speaking and eating. The dental veneers will not come loose or slip out of place. Additionally, the color, size, and shape of dental veneers are all customized for a perfect match and fit.

Another benefit dental veneers offer is that they conceal a variety of cosmetic flaws. Your Kinnelon, NJ, family dentist can help you decide if dental veneers are right for you. Some of the cosmetic concerns dental veneers can address include:

  • Stains and discolorations
  • Chips and cracks
  • Misshaped teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Rough or uneven surfaces

To learn more about how dental veneers could improve your smile, schedule an appointment with Dr. Brusco, your Kinnelon, NJ, family dentist, by calling the dental practice at (973) 838-5862.

At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!

Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”

We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:

Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.

Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

The most romantic holiday of the year, Valentine’s Day is celebrated each February 14th. It’s a time when many look forward to giving (and receiving) cards, flowers, and other tokens of love. On special days like this, it’s natural to want to look your best—and many surveys rank a person’s smile as his or her most noticeable (and appealing) physical feature. But what if you are unsatisfied with your smile?

Don’t worry! Today, cosmetic dentistry can resolve smile problems as never before. Here are some popular and effective dental treatments that can quickly brighten up your smile.

Tooth Whitening
In just one visit, dull or stained teeth can often be lightened by up to 10 shades! How? We use special bleaching solutions that are applied safely, under our careful supervision, in the dental office. You can’t use these concentrated solutions at home. But if you‘re not in a rush, we can prepare custom-made take-home bleaching trays and whiteners that are safe for home use. The same results can be achieved, but the process may take weeks instead of hours. After months or years, depending on lifestyle factors (like whether you smoke or drink coffee, red wine, etc.) your teeth can have whitening treatment again.

Cosmetic Bonding
Small chips, cracks, or other minor irregularities can be quite noticeable in an otherwise flawless smile. Fortunately, these problems can often be resolved with a treatment called cosmetic bonding. In a relatively simple in-office procedure, we can apply tooth-colored bonding material to restore teeth to better appearance. Layers of high-tech bonding material are built up and cured with a special light to form a tough, natural-looking tooth surface. Bonding isn’t as long-lasting as some other types of restoration, like veneers or crowns, but it’s an easy and inexpensive way to resolve some smile problems.

Professional In-Office Cleaning
Remember that feeling you get after your regular checkup? Your mouth feels squeaky-clean, your breath is fresh and you’re ready to show that sparkly smile. So why wait until your next routine appointment? You can schedule a hygiene visit any time. We will remove plaque from your teeth, check your gums for signs of periodontal (gum) disease, and make sure you’re on track for good oral health. If any problems are found, we’ll take care of them right away. And if you have questions about cosmetic procedures, it’s the perfect time to ask. A professional cleaning can help your smile look (and feel) great.

If you have questions about brightening up your smile, please contact our office or schedule a consultation. You can learn more in the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Artistic Repair of Front Teeth with Composite Resin” and “Important Teeth Whitening Questions Answered.”

There are numerous cosmetic procedures available for correcting or concealing various cosmetic dental concerns. Whether you want cosmetic dentistrywhiter teeth or with to hide stains, chips or cracks, there is a cosmetic dental procedure that can help you achieve your goals. Dr. Peter Brusco has a cosmetic dentistry practice in Kinnelon, NJ, and performs a variety of cosmetic dental procedures to give you your best smile ever.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are paper thin covers applied to the front of teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can conceal or correct such imperfections as chips, cracks, stains, discolorations and uneven spacing. They can even correct the appearance of teeth that are misshaped. Essentially, veneers create an entirely new front for problem teeth. Veneers are applied directly on the surface of the teeth after a small amount of enamel is first removed. Shaving off a bit of enamel allows the veneer to sit flush with the surrounding teeth and blend in seamlessly.

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns can conceal almost any cosmetic problem, while also strengthening teeth. Dental crowns look like small caps that fit right over the teeth. Once installed, a dental crown completely encapsulates the problem tooth. Any imperfections, such as stains, discolorations, cracks or chips, will be completely hidden once the dental crown is placed over the imperfect tooth. Crowns also provide a protective shell for teeth weakened by decay or daily wear and tear. With a crown, a weak tooth can perform normal biting and chewing functions once again.

What are the Advantages of Professional Teeth Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening treatments performed in your Kinnelon cosmetic dentistry office deliver superior results to over-the-counter whitening products. The bleaching agent in professional treatments is stronger than that of over-the-counter products. Whereas over-the-counter whitening treatments typically require multiple uses before visible results are attained, professional teeth whitening delivers dramatic results in a single treatment. Teeth will visibly be several shades whiter. Further, results can last for up to five years.

There are many cosmetic procedures available to give you the smile you desire. Whether you want to improve the appearance of your teeth with veneers, dental crowns, teeth whitening treatments or another procedure, there is something to suit your needs. To discuss which procedures might be right for you, schedule an appointment with Dr. Brusco by calling his cosmetic dentistry office in Kinnelon, NJ at (973) 838-5862.
